A Website I Wrote for My Wife

Some say it with a poem, some with flowers. I said it with code — and a wok.

The story of MumEat began the day my wife found out she was pregnant.

We were overjoyed — and a little lost. We wanted to eat well, every single meal, but almost all the pregnancy nutrition advice online was Western: avocado, quinoa, cold salads — nothing like the Chinese home cooking we grew up with. The Chinese resources we could find were scattered and contradictory: one page said a food was fine, the next said to avoid it.

I'm the cook in our home, and I genuinely love making food for the people I love. But even standing in my own kitchen, I kept getting stuck: Is this dish safe at this stage? Is it enough? What does she actually need more of right now?

And even when I wanted to plan properly, I had no idea where to start: I couldn't pull a week of meals into a menu that was genuinely right for a pregnant mom — let alone work out, before heading out the door, exactly which ingredients all those dishes called for. Every grocery trip was a scramble, wandering the aisles trying to remember.

So I decided to do the one thing I know how to do — write code — for her. I wanted every meal to be something she could eat without worry, and enjoy without second-guessing. That was the beginning of MumEat.

Our journey has only just begun. While we wait for our little one to arrive, we treat every meal as homework — learning slowly, cooking carefully. The reason I built this hasn't changed: to give the very best care to the wife I love, and to the son who's on his way.

Then it struck me: we surely aren't the only ones figuring this out. So I turned all that homework into a real website — hoping every new mom and dad like us can calmly get each meal right, for mom and for baby.
